Here at last is the ubiquitous Starship concert in its most complete form. The only thing missing is the very end of Volunteers, otherwise the show is totally complete as it happened. The tracks labeled "Off The Trees" are rants by the group, who were being egged on by the New York Park Police to get the fans out of the trees. Depending upon how you look at it, it's either a drag to the concert, or hysterically funny. Grace is in rare form. She sounds sharp, alert, and on edge. Her voice, although just starting to go, is still strong and powerful. -Original

Line-Up:
Grace Slick - vocals

Paul Kantner - guitar, banjo, vocals
Craig Chaquico - lead guitar, synthesizer, backing vocals

Comments:
1. caution: Lowell's guitar is very high in the mix.
2. all glitches and splices are from the master reel tapes.

The tour was in support of The Last Record Album. The band had just finished doing 5 consecutive nights at Paul's Mall (small Boston Club of the era) and this performance was recorded at the Orpheum Theatre (~2500 seats) on the night following that run. Perhaps the 5 previous nights help account for the band's over-the-top tightness and rhythmic pocket heard on this performance.
This show was originally broadcast live on WBCN 104.1 FM in Boston. There was at least one re-broadcast on WBCN about 6 months after the show. -featbase.net

Maida Vale Studio 4, (BBC World Service-Rythm & Blues), London, England – March 19th, 1969:  I Can’t Quit You, You Shook Me, Sunshine Woman.  Civic Centre, Ottawa, ON, Canada – April 14th, 1970:  Heartbreaker, Bring It On Home, White Summer/Black Mountain Side, Since I’ve Been Loving You, organ solo, Thank You, Dazed And Confused, Whole Lotta Love.

Ottawa Sunshine drew many praises when it was first released early 1998.  Ice Magazine mentioned it for several consecutive issues, singling out the improved sound quality, rarity of the material and the excellent packaging.  In the ensuing years many other titles have been released with these recordings, but this seminal House Of Elrond release still stands up. The first tape is from the March 19, 1969 “missing” BBC session from the Maida Vale Studio on the Alexis Korner show on the BBC.  Known as the session with the extreme rarity “Sunshine Woman,” the track first circulated on a very poor recording found on an extremely hard to find single and can also be found as a bonus track on the 3CD set Motor City Daze (Antrabata ARM 120773) and BBC Sessions (LSD-61/62/63/64) on Last Stand Disc. -Original

JEMS is pleased to release another significant Darkness tour upgrade, this the third and final show at the Capitol Theatre, two nights removed from the historic radio broadcast that would go on to become one of, if not the most bootlegged recordings in Springsteen history, Piece De Resistance. In homage to that bootleg classic, and in keeping with our upgraded second night title, Douceur de Vivre, we've dubbed the third night Coup de Grace, apropos, as it translates to "the finishing blow." Of course there's a case to be made for going with Bon Anniversaire, as at this show Bruce's birthday (still two days hence) was celebrated with a giant cake featuring an unusual filling.-Original

Sting has laryngitis!... "Well, well, it looks like we have to come back to Boston after all. Hé Dave, bring me something to wipe my nose with. What you're hearing on the radio here is terminal laryngitis. Any doctors in the house? I'll now blow a deflate". After blowing his nose Sting continued: "Oedipus played this record on WBCN later this day, earlier this day I should say. It was our first ever single in England. It was called Fall Out". Before Born In The 50's: "We had four audiences so far in this club. I think you're the best, I do. You're certainly the loudest". Before Roxanne Sting told that they were staying in the Bradford Hotel in the Combat Zone, the red light district of Boston: "I love the area. It reminds me of this song". The twelve minutes version included a singing competition between the people standing at the left and at right side of the club. -discogs.com
